NAHMS, a nonregulatory unit of APHIS Veterinary Services, conducted its fourth national study of the U.S. sheep industry in collaboration with USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in 2024.

The NAHMS Sheep 2024 study was designed to provide a snapshot of current sheep health and management practices on U.S. sheep operations and was conducted in 30 of the nation’s major sheep-producing states. The information collected will allow for the analysis of trends in specific topics based on previous NAHMS sheep studies.

NAHMS conducted studies on sheep production and health in 1996, 2001, and 2011 and on scrapie ovine slaughter surveillance in 2001–2003.
